Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve)
Expected excess weight loss*: 50-60%
Hospital length of stay: 1 night
Guide Price**: £11,500
Minimum BMI: 35
The laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure removes the majority of the stomach leaving a tube roughly the same size as a boiling tube used in chemistry labs. By reducing stomach size it limits food volume that can be ingested, and reduces the production of gut hormone Ghrelin that stimulates the feeling of hunger. Patients with the Sleeve Gastrectomy feel fuller quicker and a reduced appetite. The expected excess weight loss for the Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure is 60%-70% within 2 years.
Following a Sleeve Gastrectomy patients must take daily multivitamins, iron, calcium and B12 supplementation lifelong.
Like any surgery there are potential risks with the Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure which could include bleeding, infection, damage to surround organs, leak from bowel/strictures, nutritional deficiencies and reflux.
*Excess body weight is the extra weight above a normal BMI of 25. The amount of this extra weight we expected you to loose is given as percentage for example if a patient’s ideal weight is 10 stone but they actually weight 20 stone if they lost 60% of their excess weight they’d come down to 14 stone.
