Laparoscopic Roux En Y Gastric Bypass. This weight loss procedure is often the preferred choice for patients with type 2 diabetes and severe reflux disease.
The Roux En Y Gastric Bypass procedure uses stapler and sutures to divide the stomach into a smaller stomach, the size of a thumb. The small bowel is then cut and reconnected to the new smaller stomach. Food cannot then pass into the remaining stomach and the first portion of the small bowel.
The small stomach pouch fills quickly, giving an early feeling of fullness, this restriction leads to portion control. The bypassed stomach and small bowel causes a degree of malabsorption allowing better and more sustained weight loss. The beneficial side effects of the surgery are hormonal changes which can reduce appetite and ‘dumping’. Dumping can occur in 20% of post Roux En Y gastric bypass patients and is related to the ingestion of high sugar foods. The symptoms patient’s experience include nausea, sweaty, clammy, diarrhea and dizziness, thus patients avoid eating the wrong foods. The expected excess weight loss for the Roux En Y Gastric Bypass procedure is 65%-75% within 2 years.
Following a Roux En Y Gastric Bypass, due to the malabsorption element, patients must take daily multivitamin, iron, calcium, and B12 supplementation lifelong.
Like any surgery there are potential risks with the Roux En Y Gastric Bypass procedure which could include bleeding, infection, damage to surrounding organs, leak from joins, stricturing of joins, hernias and nutritional deficiencies.
*Excess body weight is the extra weight above a normal BMI of 25. The amount of this extra weight we expected you to loose is given as percentage for example if a patient’s ideal weight is 10 stone but they actually weight 20 stone if they lost 60% of their excess weight they’d come down to 14 stone.
