The Gastric Balloon procedure is done in the endoscopy unit under sedation. It is a non-surgical, non-invasive and non-permanent procedure. The gastric balloon is passed through the oesophagus into the stomach and inflated. The most common balloons are removed at either 6 or 12 months.

Whilst the balloon is temporarily in the stomach it reduces capacity and encourages portion control, helping patients feel full for longer.

Like any procedure there are potential risks with the gastric balloon procedure which could include bleeding, infection, deflation/migration leading to small bowel obstruction, ulceration and gastric perforation. There is also a 1-5% intolerance of the balloon leading to removal within the first month or so.

*Excess body weight is the extra weight above a normal BMI of 25. The amount of this extra weight we expected you to loose is given as percentage for example if a patient’s ideal weight is 10 stone but they actually weight 20 stone if they lost 60% of their excess weight they’d come down to 14 stone.
