Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is a minimal invasive weight loss procedure that restricts the size of the stomach, limiting volume of food intake by placing a band around the stomach. This surgery does not involve cutting or stapling of the stomach as do other bariatric surgeries.
The Gastric Band is an adjustable ring which is placed around the top of the stomach, creating a small upper pouch and leaving the remainder of the stomach unchanged. An access port is connected to the band and placed on the abdominal wall beneath the skin. It’s through this port Mr Kelly can adjust the band with saline to achieve patient’s optimum restriction level. The small upper pouch will fill quickly with food, giving an earlier feeling of fullness, this restriction leads to portion control. Limiting food intake will lead to weight loss, the expected excess body weight loss for this procedure is 50 – 60% within 2 years.
Like any surgery there are potential risks with the Gastric Band procedure which could include bleeding, infection, damage to surround organs, band slippage or deflation, oesophageal/pouch dilation and gastric band erosion into the stomach.
*Excess body weight is the extra weight above a normal BMI of 25. The amount of this extra weight we expected you to loose is given as percentage for example if a patient’s ideal weight is 10 stone but they actually weight 20 stone if they lost 60% of their excess weight they’d come down to 14 stone.
