Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)

Non-invasive surgery which restricts the stomach’s capacity by 80%. This reversible treatment slows the stomach from emptying, keeping you fuller for longer. This offers similar weight loss benefits but without the surgery or scars. It is also a safer, lower risk procedure performed as a day case in around two hours under general anaesthetic.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is a scarless weight loss procedure. Mr Jamie Kelly was the first surgeon in the UK to perform an ESG procedure and continues to pioneer research in endoscopic bariatric surgery. The Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty reduces the size of the stomach using an endoscopic suturing device, without the need for abdominal wall incisions. It is a safe and effective alternative to the established weight loss options.

The ESG produces a narrower, shorter stomach and leaves a small pouch at the top of the stomach. No stomach is removed and the nerve supply remains intact. The food enters the pouch causing distention. This distention causes the stretch receptor nerves to fire impulses to the brain making patients feel full. The stretch receptors also fire impulses to the bottom of the stomach to delay its emptying. The patient uses the feeling of fullness to portion control and the delayed emptying mean patients feel fuller for longer. The procedure turbo charges the body’s normal physiology without the need to remove any of the stomach. Therefore we do not see the nutritional deficiencies or gastroesophageal reflux seen with other weight loss procedures.

Like any surgery there are some potential risks with the Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty procedure however the risks are much lower than conventional surgery and has faster recovery time.

*Excess body weight is the extra weight above a normal BMI of 25. The amount of this extra weight we expected you to loose is given as percentage for example if a patient’s ideal weight is 10 stone but they actually weight 20 stone if they lost 60% of their excess weight they’d come down to 14 stone.
